Dense Fog Hits Flight Schedules as IndiGo, SpiceJet Alert Passengers
Fog and low visibility are again disturbing air travel in North India, with IndiGo, SpiceJet and Air India warning passengers about delays and potential cancellations. Advisories mention "bad weather" over several airports, and airlines say disruption could continue into 30 December as dense fog affects both departures and arrivals.
Air India has cautioned that operations on 30 December may not run on schedule at many airports. The airline highlighted poor visibility in Delhi, Amritsar, Jammu, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Darbhanga, Patna, Guwahati and Bagdogra, and advised passengers to track their bookings closely for any last-minute changes or delays.

Flight weather advisory: cancellations, delays and key affected airports
IndiGo’s website shows that around 80 flights were cancelled earlier in the day because of weather. Roughly half of these were linked to Delhi airport, while the rest involved other major hubs including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Cochin, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Dehradun, Indore, Patna and Bhopal, according to information shared with PTI.
Air India summarised its warning in a message on X, the platform earlier known as Twitter. The airline posted: "Due to expected bad weather (poor visibility) in Delhi (DEL), Amritsar (ATQ), Jammu (IXJ), Ayodhya (AYJ), Gorakhpur (GOP), Varanasi (VNS), Darbhanga (DBR), Patna (PAT), Guwahati (GAU), and Bagdogra (IXB), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights might get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status," Air India wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Flight weather advisory: visibility impact and IndiGo’s network response
IndiGo, which is still dealing with the impact of a mass cancellation episode earlier this month, also shared a detailed alert. The airline warned that "fog is expected to develop during the late-night hours and extend into the morning, with periods of reduced visibility across several airports in the region."
In the same advisory, IndiGo explained that schedules may shift as staff adjust to the conditions. The airline said, "In view of the forecast, flight movements may see some impact, with some delays possible as operations adjust to the prevailing conditions. We remain vigilant and continue to monitor the weather closely to ensure your journey progresses as smoothly as possible," it added.
Flight weather advisory: airports and routes under strain
The list of locations flagged by airlines covers many of the busiest routes in North and East India. Affected airports include national and regional hubs, as shown below for passengers planning trips or transit connections over 30 December and surrounding days.
| Airline | Key affected airports |
|---|---|
| Air India | Delhi, Amritsar, Jammu, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Darbhanga, Patna, Guwahati, Bagdogra |
| IndiGo | Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Cochin, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Dehradun, Indore, Patna, Bhopal |
IndiGo also pointed out that the same fog making runways hard to use could slow road travel. The airline advised customers to leave earlier for the airport, as reduced visibility in the early hours may affect traffic flow and increase travel time on key routes leading to major terminals.
By around 11 am, IndiGo told passengers that the fog over Delhi and other northern airports had not lifted. The carrier noted that the earlier disruption was stretching into midday, with "earlier impact on flight movements is likely to extend into the noon hours, and some delays may continue".
Flight weather advisory: evening fog and continuing delays
Later, IndiGo reported that conditions in Dehradun were worsening as fog returned in the evening. An update on X stated, "Our teams are continuing to support customers at the airport and are in close coordination with authorities to resume smoother operations as soon as conditions permit. Please keep checking your flight status for the latest information," it wrote on X.
IndiGo added that staff were trying to handle departures and arrivals in a steady sequence despite the fog. The airline told passengers that "We assure you that flight departures and arrivals are being sequenced to ensure steady and orderly movement, while keeping your journey and comfort in mind," it said, signalling that disruption may ease once visibility improves.
