Delhi-NCR Weather Update: Rain Showers Drop Temperature To 17 Degrees; IMD Issues Orange Alert

Residents in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to a dramatic shift in weather conditions. Heavy rainfall, lightning, and strong winds swept across the region, bringing much-needed relief from rising temperatures.

The sudden downpour made the morning cooler and more pleasant. However, authorities have also warned that the weather may cause travel disruptions, especially for office-goers and students heading out for exams.

Temperature Drops to Lowest Levels This March

The rainfall led to a noticeable drop in temperature across the city. According to weather data, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 26.8°C, making it the lowest for this month so far.

This change comes as a relief after several days of warm weather. The cloudy skies and continuous rain have helped cool down the overall atmosphere.

Since there has been no update regarding school closures, schools are open today.

Rainfall Recorded Across Key Areas

Several parts of Delhi received moderate rainfall over the past 24 hours. The Safdarjung weather station recorded an average of 9.4 mm rainfall till March 19, which is close to the monthly average of 12.6 mm.

Here's how different areas recorded rainfall:

• Safdarjung & Lodhi Road - 8.2 mm
• Ridge area - 8.6 mm
• Palam - 6.2 mm
• Ayanagar - 7.2 mm
• Pitampura - 5.5 mm
• Mayur Vihar - 3 mm
• Janakpuri - 12.5 mm

Light rainfall was also reported in parts of the city a day earlier, indicating a continuing weather pattern.

IMD Issues Orange Alert for Today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Delhi and nearby regions. This means residents should stay cautious as more rain and thunderstorms are expected.

The forecast includes:

• Light to moderate rainfall
• Thunderstorms and lightning
• Wind speeds of 40-50 km/h
• Possibility of hailstorms in some areas

Cities like Noida, Dadri, and Greater Noida are also likely to experience similar conditions.
Why Has the Weather Changed?

Weather experts say the sudden change is due to a western disturbance affecting North India.

According to meteorologist Mahesh Palawat, this system is currently active over northern Pakistan and nearby Jammu & Kashmir. It is causing heavy rainfall in the western Himalayan regions and influencing weather patterns in nearby states.

Additionally, a cyclonic circulation over Haryana is contributing to rainfall in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and surrounding areas.
