CM Bhagwant Mann Inaugurates Tata Steel Plant In Ludhiana, 2,700 Direct And 10,000 Indirect Jobs

Punjab inaugurates a 115-acre green steel facility in Ludhiana, powered by 100% scrap-based electric arc furnace technology. The Rs 3200 crore project, led by Tata Steel, aims to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs while boosting cleaner manufacturing and Punjab’s industrial profile.

Punjab has launched what officials call a landmark industrial project, with CM Bhagwant Mann inaugurating India’s first electric arc furnace-based green steel plant in Ludhiana. Set up by Tata Steel, the facility is described as the country’s second-largest such unit, signalling a push towards cleaner production methods and a fresh phase of manufacturing growth in the state.

The Ludhiana green steel plant, spread over 115 acres, involves an investment of Rs 3200 crore. CM Bhagwant Mann said industry that left Punjab because of earlier policy decisions is now returning under an industry-friendly approach. The project is expected to provide direct jobs to around 2700 people and generate indirect work for nearly 10,000, supporting thousands of families.

Punjab green steel plant boosts clean technology and industrial image

While addressing the gathering, CM Bhagwant Mann said the day marked a proud moment for Punjab. Mann said Punjab has become the first state in India where 100% steel scrap is used through electric arc furnace technology to produce green steel. According to Mann, this method improves production efficiency while meeting global standards on environmental protection and cleaner manufacturing practices.

Mann pointed out that investment from a global player like Tata Steel reflects rising confidence in Punjab’s industrial strengths and governance. Mann linked the Ludhiana green steel plant to a broader shift towards sustainable growth. Mann said the project highlights that the state is ready to align heavy industry with environmental responsibilities rather than treat them as separate concerns.

Punjab green steel plant creates jobs and new opportunities

The government expects the green steel plant to open fresh avenues for engineers and skilled workers across Punjab. Officials said the project will support families through both direct and indirect employment, besides creating allied business demand. Mann highlighted that the initial investment proposal of Rs 2600 crore has already increased to Rs 3200 crore, suggesting expanding plans and deeper long-term engagement.

Punjab green steel plant linked with wider investment push

Drawing from a recent visit to Japan, Mann said Punjab is gearing up for global competition. Mann underlined that Punjab’s air, rail and road connectivity makes the state suitable for large investments. The CM said that, in the past four years, Punjab has attracted investments worth Rs 1.58 lakh crore, which officials estimate have created employment for nearly 5 lakh young people.

Mann added that discussions with the Tata group also covered the possibility of launching direct flights from Punjab to Europe and other Western destinations. According to Mann, such routes would support exporters and investors connected with the green steel plant and other industries. The CM said improved connectivity would strengthen Punjab’s position as a preferred production and logistics base.

During the event, CM Bhagwant Mann paid a personal tribute to late industrialist Ratan Tata. Mann referred to Ratan Tata as “देश का बेटा” and said Tata group is known not just for business but also for credibility and social responsibility. Mann praised Ratan Tata’s decision to create a dog shelter at Bombay House, calling it an example of a humane outlook in corporate life.

Mann described Punjab as the land of gurus and martyrs and said values of sacrifice and service guide the state’s progress. According to Mann, every seed grows in Punjab except the seed of hate. Mann expressed confidence that Punjab will guide the country not only as an “अन्नदाता” but also as a major industrial centre, with the Ludhiana green steel plant as one important step.

Mann shared the stage with several senior officials, including industry minister Sanjeev Arora, cabinet minister Hardeep Singh Mundian and chief secretary K.A.P. Sinha. The presence of top functionaries underlined the importance the state government places on the Ludhiana project. For the administration, the plant is presented as part of a larger plan to combine industrial expansion, environmental care and broader employment in Punjab.
