Assam Final Voter List Out: Assam Now Has 2.49 Crore Registered Voters; 2.4 Lakh Names Deleted After SIR

The Election Commission of India has published the final voter list for Assam following the Special Intensive Revision, marking a key milestone ahead of the state's 2026 Assembly elections. The updated roll records 2.49 crore registered voters, slightly fewer than the 2.52 crore in the December 2025 draft list, after corrections and deletions. Officials say these adjustments, along with delimitation of constituencies, are expected to influence political strategies across Assam.

The current government's term ends in May 2026, with elections likely in March or April 2026. In the 2021 Assembly polls, the NDA led by BJP won 75 seats, and Himanta Biswa Sarma became Chief Minister. Analysts suggest that the 2026 contest could see significant shifts due to redrawn constituency boundaries and revised voter rolls.

Key Figures from the Final Voter List

The final voter list for February 2026 shows 2,49,58,139 registered voters, a 0.97% drop from the draft list of 2,52,01,624 voters. Around 2.43 lakh names were deleted, mainly due to deaths, duplicate entries, and migration verification. The Election Commission says these updates aim to ensure accuracy of the voter roll, a critical factor for fair elections.

Even minor changes in voter numbers could affect party calculations in closely contested constituencies, making the updated list a key reference for all political players.

Gender Balance and Young Voter Trends

The final voter roll highlights a near-equal gender ratio, with 1,24,82,213 male voters, 1,24,75,583 female voters, and 343 registered under the third gender. Officials attribute this parity to higher female enrolment and comprehensive field verification.

Political parties are also studying enrolment among first-time and young voters, as the combination of new additions and deletions may shift traditional voting patterns in several constituencies. With delimitation and voter roll updates, Assam's political landscape is expected to undergo significant changes ahead of the 2026 elections.
