Claims that Eggoz eggs may contain banned chemicals linked with cancer have triggered concern online and offline. The latest wave of panic followed testing claims by the YouTube channel Trustified, which reportedly examined eggs linked with Ego Nutrition GI, a supplier associated with Eggoz. The channel’s video alleged that banned substances were present, contradicting Eggoz’s earlier positioning as an antibiotic-free and chemical-conscious egg producer.

Research on eggs and cancer has produced mixed findings, but experts have not reached a firm conclusion. A large meta-analysis published in 2022 suggested that very high egg intake might slightly increase cancer mortality. However, the same analysis reported no strong association with cardiovascular disease or overall mortality rates.

Scientists therefore do not support the broad claim that eggs, as a food group, cause cancer. Most studies instead focus on overall diet, lifestyle, and specific risk factors. Current evidence does not justify calling eggs unsafe in general, though it does highlight the need for strict monitoring of contaminants and farming practices.

Mumbai-based orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist Dr. Manan Vora publicly discussed the Trustified findings and his worries about the supply chain. Dr. Vora highlighted that Trustified’s report allegedly detected nitrofuran and nitroimidazole in tested eggs, both classed as genotoxic chemicals that can interfere with DNA and could raise cancer risk in humans.

Addressing followers directly, Dr. Vora said, "'Eggs can cause cancer' – you will see this all over your timeline today. Let me tell you what the truth is. There is a brand called Ego Nutrition GI. I also eat these eggs; so I am shocked as well. An independent YouTube channel called Trustified found certain banned substances inside this, which is shocking. In the report, two banned substances, nitrofuran and nitroimidazole, were found when these eggs were tested. Now, why are they banned because they are known to be genotoxic? It's they can alter your DNA and potentially even cause cancer," he said.

Dr. Vora also questioned how a supplier accused of using such drugs could still operate, and why India appears to tolerate low residue levels when several other countries insist on zero. He alleged that nitrofuran-class compounds were detected at around 0.7 units, above a preferred level below 0.4, according to the cited laboratory document.

Explaining why such chemicals might be used in poultry, Dr. Vora said, "Now you will ask, if this is banned, why did the brand use these drugs? Because they have been used in the hens to actually keep them away from bacteria, away from infection and keep them more and more stable so that they can produce more and more eggs. This is illegal in the poultry business. And this brand, which claims not to do any of this, has now been exposed to test nitrofuran metabolite Aoz, which was found in the report to be around 0.7. It should have ideally been even below 0.4. Other countries have an absolute zero tolerance for these substances, and they should not be allowed at all," he said.

Yet Dr. Vora urged restraint and discouraged blanket fear around eggs. As Dr. Vora clarified, "Eggs overall are not a scam. The concern is about certain suppliers, not the food itself." The focus, according to Dr. Vora, should be on accountability, rigorous testing, and better enforcement of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India regulations.

On 9 December, Eggoz released a detailed statement responding to the YouTube test video and the surrounding chatter. The company insisted its eggs are safe, adding that they comply with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India norms, which allow very small residues when caused by environmental exposure that farmers cannot fully control.

Eggoz said, "We are aware of a video that is currently being shared and understand that it may have raised some questions and concerns. We want to reassure our consumers that our eggs are safe for consumption and comply with the standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)." The statement directly addressed consumer doubts about chemical contamination.

Offering more detail on its operations, the brand added, "We take every care to maintain quality and safety at our farms and across the entire value chain which includes ensuring zero anti-biotic usage. Our process also includes sourcing best quality feed, to storage, transport and delivery, which is in line with established food safety practices" Eggoz stressed that the supply chain is monitored from farm to final delivery.

The company further said, "As an added measure to provide further reassurance to our consumers and other stakeholders, we have initiated additional testing through an independent NABL-accredited laboratory. We remain committed to transparency, safety, and earning the trust of everyone who chooses our products," the company said. Following criticism, Eggoz also uploaded its laboratory reports online for public access.

Evidence so far does not support claims that eggs as a category cause cancer, yet the allegations have highlighted the need for tighter oversight, clearer residue limits and transparent communication between regulators, brands and Indian households.
