Anuj Agnihotri grew up in Rawatbhata, a small town located near the Chambal River and widely known for housing the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station.

In a recorded mock interview during his preparation, Agnihotri introduced Rawatbhata simply as "a small town in Rajasthan," where he completed most of his early schooling.

The township has a unique identity in India because it grew around nuclear power facilities that began operating in the 1970s. The presence of scientific institutions has long created a strong academic culture in the region, encouraging students to pursue careers in science, engineering and public service.

Medical education at AIIMS Jodhpur

After completing school, Agnihotri moved to Jodhpur to pursue medicine at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences Jodhpur.

He completed his MBBS degree in 2023, a demanding medical programme that requires years of rigorous academic training and hospital exposure.

However, instead of pursuing a long-term career in clinical medicine, he chose a different path-public administration through the civil services.

From doctor to civil servant

Before securing the top rank in UPSC, Agnihotri had already entered government service through the Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Civil Service (DANICS).

At the time his mock interview videos were recorded by the coaching institute Ensure IAS, he was undergoing probation training in the service while continuing to prepare for the UPSC examination.

His responses during these practice interviews reflected a candidate comfortable discussing policy issues, governance challenges and ethical dilemmas, even when he openly admitted when he did not know a particular answer - a quality often valued in the UPSC personality test.

Family background and values

Agnihotri comes from a modest family. His father works at the nuclear power plant in Kota, while his mother is a homemaker.

Like many successful UPSC candidates from smaller towns, his journey highlights the role of family support, disciplined education and sustained preparation in achieving success in the civil services.

Roots in a disciplined academic environment

Anuj Agnihotri's journey reflects the strong educational culture of Rawatbhata. The township developed around nuclear research and power facilities, which created a community where science, discipline and academic excellence are deeply valued.

Schools in the township have traditionally produced students who go on to pursue careers in engineering, science, and public administration. Growing up in such an environment likely played a role in shaping the focus and discipline needed for UPSC preparation.

UPSC records show that Anuj Agnihotri achieved the top position in the third attempt. Speaking after the announcement, Agnihotri said the candidate was "still trying to process the results". Agnihotri is currently a probationer in the DANICS service and completed medical studies at AIIMS Jodhpur, graduating in 2023 before entering the civil services recruitment process.
