AI skin health app Derma Vision by Ahmedabad students flags 50 cases at screening

Students from a private school in Ahmedabad created an AI skin health awareness app. The tool flagged about 50 people needing a dermatologist during a local screening. The school said the trial added credibility and showed clear community value. The app is called Derma Vision and it was designed to guide early action.

The school said the project later earned a national award at a major student contest. Derma Vision won the Best Innovative Idea in Artificial Intelligence at the Vigyantram National Championship, 2026. The event took place at the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi in January. The app competed against entries from 49 schools across India.

The app was used during a Womens Day awareness programme in Ahmedabad, the statement said. More than 450 women took part in the screening. Participants included teachers, administrative staff, and ground staff from Udgamverse schools. Each participant received an AI-based skin scan through the Derma Vision application.

The school described the results as notable for early detection and follow-up. Around 50 participants showed visible skin patterns linked to conditions needing expert advice. The statement said these cases required professional dermatological consultation. The findings, it added, underlined the value of awareness and timely intervention.

Derma Vision was developed by Dishen Gadhiya, Hetansh Patel, Yug Dalsania, and Janmesh Darji. The students study in Classes 7 and 8 at Zebar School. The app uses computer vision to review visible skin patterns. It then displays the results in a simple format for users.

The application also offers basic care guidance for common concerns. It lists preventive steps and home remedies to support safe action at home. The statement said it suggests visiting a dermatologist only when required. It also said this approach helps people choose the right next step early.

A consulting dermatologist linked to the initiative stressed the need for timely checks. "Early awareness plays a crucial role in managing many skin conditions. Technology-enabled screening tools like Derma Vision can act as a first level of guidance, helping people take the right steps at the right time and consult specialists only when necessary. It is inspiring to see young students contributing to preventive healthcare awareness,\" the dermatologist said.

The school said the students plan further work after the screening outcomes. The team aims to collaborate with dermatologists to validate the application. The statement also mentioned plans to improve ethical and clinical safeguards. The school said the next phase will focus on stronger checks while keeping community usefulness.
