With this delivery, Adani Defence becomes the first large-scale private sector company in India to manufacture and supply light machine guns domestically. The batch was delivered within seven months, well ahead of the contracted timeline, highlighting accelerated production and execution capabilities.
The development of the First-of-Production Model was completed in six months, compared to the originally planned 18 months. Following this, Bulk Production Clearance enabled a swift transition to large-scale manufacturing.
The weapons were produced at the company’s small arms manufacturing facility in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Spread over 100 acres, the facility integrates advanced technologies such as CNC machining, robotics, precision metrology, metallurgy labs, and an underground firing range. It is India’s first fully integrated private-sector hub for small arms production.
Officials from the Ministry of Defence and senior members of the armed forces attended the delivery event, underscoring the importance of the milestone in strengthening indigenous defence capabilities. The Prahar LMG has been designed to meet modern battlefield requirements, offering high accuracy, reliability, and durability. It supports both semi-automatic and automatic firing modes and is capable of operating effectively in adverse conditions. Each unit undergoes rigorous lifecycle testing, ballistic assessments, and environmental trials before deployment.
The Gwalior facility has an annual production capacity of up to 100,000 weapons, with over 90 percent of components sourced domestically. This initiative is also contributing to employment generation and supporting MSMEs in the defence supply chain.
In addition, the company’s ammunition complex in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, commissioned in 2024, complements the weapons manufacturing ecosystem with a production capacity of around 300 million rounds of small-caliber ammunition annually. The development is seen as a major step toward reducing India’s dependence on imported infantry weapons and advancing the country’s goal of self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
