The long-awaited Vijayawada West Bypass project has received a major push, offering relief to passengers travelling on the busy Chennai-Kolkata corridor via Andhra Pradesh.

The bypass is being developed to ease congestion in Vijayawada city by diverting through traffic, especially long-distance and heavy vehicles, away from urban roads.
Authorities have now moved into the next phase of construction, while also providing clarity on toll fee collection for motorists using the partially opened stretch.
One Side of Bypass Open, Work Begins on Opposite Carriageway
The stretch connecting Kaja in Mangalagiri mandal of Guntur district has already been opened for vehicles travelling towards Eluru without entering Vijayawada city. This has made travel smoother for commuters heading from the Guntur side towards Eluru and further north.
On Friday, construction work officially began on the opposite side of the bypass for vehicles travelling from Eluru towards Guntur. The works were launched at Kaja with ceremonial prayers conducted by NHAI regional officer R K Singh. He stated that the remaining construction would be taken up at full speed to ensure timely completion.
Full Bypass Expected to Open by March
According to NHAI officials, the aim is to make both sides of the Vijayawada West Bypass fully operational by March. Until then, vehicles are being allowed to move temporarily on one side from Kaja to manage traffic flow efficiently.
Once completed, the bypass will directly link NH-16, which connects Chennai and Kolkata, with NH-65 towards Hyderabad. This is expected to significantly reduce travel time, lower congestion within Vijayawada, and improve safety for commuters.
No Toll Fee Until Both Sides Are Fully Operational
Providing clear relief to motorists, R K Singh confirmed that toll charges will not be collected until the bypass is fully opened in both directions. He said toll fees would be imposed only after the entire stretch becomes operational for two-way traffic.
This decision ensures that vehicles currently using the partially opened road from Guntur towards Eluru can do so without any toll burden. Even after work on the second side continues, commuters will remain exempt from toll payments until full completion.
Major Boost for Regional Connectivity
The Vijayawada West Bypass is considered a crucial infrastructure project for Andhra Pradesh. Once operational, it is expected to reduce pressure on city roads, streamline interstate travel, and improve connectivity between Guntur, Amaravati, Eluru, Hyderabad, and Visakhapatnam.
With one side already open and the second side progressing rapidly, the project is now moving closer to delivering long-term traffic relief for one of the state's busiest transport corridors.
