LPG Cylinder Price Hiked By Rs 60: Why Hyderabad Has The Most Expensive LPG In India

Domestic cooking gas prices have been increased by Rs 60 per cylinder in Hyderabad and several other cities from Saturday, March 8. The hike comes amid rising global energy costs triggered by the ongoing West Asia crisis, putting additional pressure on India, the world's third-largest energy consumer.

With the latest revision, households in Hyderabad will now pay Rs 965 for a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder. The price increase marks the second hike in less than a year and affects both regular consumers and beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.

Domestic LPG Prices Rise Across Major Cities

According to data available on the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) website, the price of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi has increased from Rs 853 to Rs 913 following the latest revision.

For beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the increase will also be applicable. After factoring in the Rs 300 subsidy provided for up to 12 refills per year, Ujjwala beneficiaries will now pay Rs 613 per cylinder.

The revised domestic LPG cylinder prices across major metro cities are:

• Hyderabad: Rs 965
• Kolkata: Rs 939
• Chennai: Rs 928.5
• Bengaluru: Rs 915.5
• Delhi: Rs 913

Commercial LPG Cylinder Rates In Metro Cities

Alongside domestic cylinders, commercial LPG cylinders used by hotels and businesses have different pricing across major metros.

The current commercial LPG cylinder prices are:

• Hyderabad: Rs 2105.50
• Kolkata: Rs 1988.50
• Chennai: Rs 2043.50
• Bengaluru: Rs 1958.00
• Delhi: Rs 1884.50

These rates vary depending on transportation costs, taxation and local market conditions.

No Immediate Change Expected In Petrol And Diesel

Despite the LPG price hike, sources indicated that there is unlikely to be any immediate revision in petrol and diesel prices.

India's three major fuel retailers, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), reportedly have sufficient financial capacity to absorb fluctuations in crude oil prices after posting strong profits earlier this year.

Retail petrol and diesel prices have remained unchanged since April 2022. Fuel retailers have been managing price volatility by absorbing losses during periods of high crude prices and making gains when global oil rates fall.

Why LPG Is Costlier In Hyderabad

Among the major metro cities, Hyderabad currently has the highest LPG cylinder price. The higher rate is largely attributed to varying state and local taxes.

Residents in Telangana face relatively elevated LPG prices due to these additional tax components. Within the state, Nirmal district records the highest gas rates, where commercial LPG cylinders cost Rs 2148.5 while domestic cylinders are priced at Rs 990.
