The Indore-Ichhapur National Highway in Madhya Pradesh, featuring tunnels like Bherughat and Choral Ghat, is expected to be completed by December this year, enhancing safe connectivity between Indore and Hyderabad through challenging terrain.

The project includes the construction of three tunnels through mountainous terrain, a move aimed at improving connectivity and ensuring safer travel along the busy interstate corridor.

Officials said the tunnels will help motorists avoid steep, narrow and risky mountain roads, enabling smoother and safer movement of traffic on the route.

Challenging Terrain Along Key Highway Stretch

The highway is part of the Indore-Ichhapur National Highway project currently being developed in Madhya Pradesh. According to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials, the work is progressing steadily despite the difficult terrain.

After inspecting the construction site on Monday, March 9, NHAI regional officer Shravan Kumar Singh said the project is on track for completion by the end of the year.

"The Indore-Ichhapur National Highway being built in Madhya Pradesh would be completed by December this year," Singh told reporters following the inspection.

Officials noted that the most challenging section lies along the 33.40 kilometre stretch between Tejaji Nagar in Indore and Balwada in Khargone district. The route passes through rugged hills and steep ghat sections, which have traditionally posed risks for motorists.

Three Mountain Tunnels to Improve Safety

To address the difficult terrain, three tunnels are being carved through the hills using modern electronic blasting technology. This method is designed to safely remove the steep ghat sections and improve overall road safety.

The tunnels include the 575 metre long Bherughat tunnel, the 550 metre long Choral Ghat tunnel, and the 480 metre long Baigram tunnel.

Officials said the tunnels will significantly reduce the need for vehicles to navigate sharp turns and steep inclines, making travel faster and safer.

Faster Connectivity Between Major Cities

The new four lane highway is expected to improve connectivity not only within Madhya Pradesh but also across states.

"This highway will also facilitate vehicular movement between Indore and Hyderabad via Jalgaon in Maharashtra," Singh added.

The project will also make travel easier between Indore and the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, a major pilgrimage site that attracts large numbers of devotees throughout the year.

Once completed, the highway is expected to reduce road accidents, ease congestion on existing routes and cut down travel time between Indore and several important destinations along the corridor.
