Hyderabad Schools May Face Fee Hike Cap as Telangana Proposes 8 Percent Increase Once in Two Years

Schools in Hyderabad could soon face tighter controls on how much they are allowed to raise tuition fees, with the School Education Department proposing a cap of up to eight percent once every two years.

The move is aimed at curbing sharp and frequent fee hikes that have drawn criticism from parents across the city and other parts of Telangana.

Government proposes cap on school fee hikes

Under the proposal, private and corporate schools would be restricted to increasing fees by a maximum of eight percent over a two-year period. The plan seeks to bring uniformity and predictability to school fees, particularly in urban centres like Hyderabad where parents have complained of sudden and steep increases.

If approved, the regulation would apply to schools across Telangana and mark a significant shift in how school fees are monitored by the state.

Approval needed for increases beyond limit

Schools that want to raise fees beyond the proposed cap would need to seek prior approval from the government. Such requests would be examined by the State Fee Regulatory Committee, which would assess detailed financial records, including revenue and expenditure statements, before taking a decision.

Officials say this mechanism is intended to ensure transparency and prevent arbitrary fee revisions that place an undue burden on families.

How the proposal compares with earlier recommendations

The move differs slightly from earlier suggestions made by the Telangana Education Commission. In its report to the government, the commission had recommended allowing a 10 to 15 percent hike once every three years, drawing parallels with the fee regulation model followed for private professional colleges in the state.

Separately, the Telangana Recognised School Managements Association had last year urged the government to permit private schools to raise tuition fees by up to 10 percent every year, citing rising operational costs.

Steep fee hikes prompt regulatory push

The proposed cap comes after reports of unusually high fee increases by some schools in Hyderabad. In certain cases, fees were raised by as much as 65 percent in a single academic cycle. Media reports also highlighted a well-known school in Bachupally that increased its annual fee to Rs 3.7 lakh.

At present, many schools in the city are increasing fees by 10 to 12 percent, with some going even higher despite already charging premium amounts. Whether the new proposal will be cleared and implemented in time for the upcoming academic year remains uncertain, but it has already sparked wide interest among parents and school managements alike.
