Hyderabad-Chennai Bullet Train Route Reworked, Telangana Stretch Reduced By Nearly 50 Percent
The proposed Hyderabad-Chennai High Speed Rail Corridor has undergone a major redesign, with the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) significantly altering its alignment in Telangana. The revised route reduces the corridor's length within the state from 236 km to 123 km and aligns it with key Telangana government projects such as Future City and the proposed Dry Port.

Officials said NHSRCL has already informed the state government about the updated alignment, which is expected to support Telangana's long-term infrastructure plans while improving connectivity with upcoming industrial and logistics hubs.
New Alignment Linked to Future City and Dry Port Plans
Under the original proposal, the bullet train corridor was planned to originate from Shamshabad and pass through Batasingaram, Narketpally, Suryapet and Khammam before entering Andhra Pradesh.
However, NHSRCL is now conducting surveys for a revised route that will run through Shamshabad, Future City, the proposed Dry Port, Halia and Vadapalli. Sources indicated that the Telangana government had requested the corridor be aligned through the Future City-Vadapalli region to complement planned development projects.
The Hyderabad-Chennai bullet train corridor will connect Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. One of the most significant benefits of the revised route is the reduction in land acquisition requirements. The earlier alignment required nearly 790 hectares of land in Telangana, while the new route cuts the state's corridor length by almost 50%.
Four Bullet Train Stations Planned in Telangana
As part of the updated proposal, NHSRCL has identified four stations within Telangana: Future City, Dry Port, Halia and Vadapalli.
Of these, Dry Port, Halia and Vadapalli stations will be located in Nalgonda district. The proposed Dry Port station is expected to play a strategic role in strengthening Telangana's logistics ecosystem.
The state government has been actively pursuing the dry port project to improve export-import operations despite being a landlocked state. The facility is envisioned as an inland logistics centre where cargo can be stored, loaded and unloaded before being transported to seaports. Customs clearance facilities are also planned at the site.
Officials believe that integrating a high-speed rail station with the dry port will enhance freight connectivity and support industrial growth in the region.
Station Locations and Regional Connectivity
According to the proposed plan, the Dry Port station will be situated approximately 12 km from National Highway-19 and around 15 km from Mall village in Nalgonda district. Mall village lies along the border of Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts and falls under Chinthapally and Yacharam mandals.
The Halia station is proposed near State Highway-167, roughly 10 km from the Halia mandal headquarters. Miryalaguda railway station, located about 35 km away, will serve as the nearest conventional rail connection, while Nalgonda town is around 55 km from the site.
Meanwhile, the Vadapalli station is expected to come up about 15 km from State Highway-167. The location is approximately 33 km from Halia and nearly 60 km from Miryalaguda.
Shamshabad Set to Become Southern India's High-Speed Rail Hub
Apart from serving as the starting point of the Telangana section, Shamshabad is also expected to become the operational nerve centre for high-speed rail services in southern India.
Initially, NHSRCL planned to construct a bullet train station directly opposite Hyderabad airport's passenger terminal to allow seamless transfers between flights and high-speed trains. However, GMR Airports informed authorities about future expansion plans in front of the terminal building, forcing a revision of those plans.
As a result, travellers may have to cover a distance of around 3 km to 4 km between the airport terminal and the high-speed rail station. Authorities are working on a proposed monorail connection to bridge this gap.
NHSRCL has also proposed establishing the Operational Control Centre and the primary maintenance depot for the southern high-speed rail network at Shamshabad. The facility will oversee operations for future bullet train services connecting Hyderabad with Chennai, Bengaluru and Pune.
With the revised alignment and planned operational infrastructure, Shamshabad is poised to emerge as a key hub in India's expanding high-speed rail network across the southern region.
