Vijay-Sangeetha Divorce Case Hearing Date: When Will Chengalpattu Court Hear The Plea?

The personal life of actor-turned-politician Vijay has come under intense legal and political scrutiny after his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, initiated divorce proceedings before a court in Chengalpattu. The development has triggered widespread discussion, not just within the film fraternity but also in political circles, given Vijay's position as chief of Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

While the petition has now formally entered the judicial process, attention is increasingly turning to when the matter will be taken up for substantive hearing and how the proceedings are likely to unfold in the coming weeks.

Sangeetha filed her plea under the provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, before the Principal District Judge's court in Chengalpattu on December 5, 2025. The case was subsequently transferred to the jurisdictional family court on February 24 this year for adjudication. Following preliminary proceedings, the court has moved the case forward, marking the beginning of what could be a closely watched legal battle.

During the initial hearing held recently, the family court directed Vijay to appear in person. The matter now stands adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled for April 20. It is on that date that the court is expected to take up the case for further proceedings, including recording appearances and possibly framing the scope of issues to be addressed.

In her petition, Sangeetha has traced the history of their marriage, stating that it was first registered in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998, and later solemnised according to Hindu rites in Chennai on August 25, 1999. She has described the early years of the marriage as cordial, noting that she devoted herself to raising their children and supporting Vijay's professional commitments.

However, the petition alleges that in April 2021 she discovered that Vijay was involved in an adulterous relationship with an अभिनेत्री, an allegation that she claims caused her deep emotional pain and mental suffering. Despite assurances, she has contended that the association continued, leading to prolonged mental cruelty, public humiliation, and strain within the family.

According to the plea, attempts were made between September 2021 and February 2022 to resolve the dispute amicably through legal notices and counsel. She has further stated that efforts at reconciliation continued through personal discussions up to 2025, but without success. The petition also alleges emotional withdrawal, distancing from conjugal life, exclusion from social and professional engagements, and financial restrictions.

While she has chosen not to name the actress involved, citing reputational concerns, the petition reserves her right to implead the individual as a second respondent if required during the course of the proceedings.

Sangeetha has sought dissolution of the marriage, permanent alimony, continued residence in the matrimonial home or equivalent accommodation, and in-camera proceedings to safeguard privacy.

As the case heads toward its next hearing on April 20, legal observers expect procedural steps such as appearance, response filings, and possible mediation directions to shape the early phase of the trial. With both personal and political stakes high, the upcoming hearing is likely to be closely watched across Tamil Nadu.
