Vijay Divorce: The Reason Behind Sangeetha’s Decision To Part Ways Revealed

After nearly two years of persistent rumours about trouble in their marriage, actor Vijay and his wife Sangeeta Sornalingam have now formally entered legal proceedings.

Sangeeta has filed a petition for divorce, bringing clarity to speculation that had been circulating in industry circles and on social media for over 24 months.

The couple, who tied the knot in August 1999, have been married for more than 25 years. They share two children - Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha. For years, they were seen as one of the more private and stable families in the film fraternity, with Sangeeta largely staying away from the public spotlight while supporting Vijay's career.

Whispers about strain in the relationship began surfacing in 2023. The absence of of Sangeeta' in Vijay's political rallies added fuel to the growing speculations on the troubled marriage.

While neither Vijay nor his family addressed the rumours at the time, speculation intensified as the couple continued to maintain silence.

Rumours had linked Vijay to an alleged close association with a leading Tamil actress. However, neither the actor and the TVK founder nor the actress in question had directly addressed the issue.

Many had downplayed the reports and thought that it was an attempt by the political parties to tarnish his name as Vijay shifted his focus from cinema to politics.

The Reason Behind The Divorce - What The Petition Says

The matter has now moved beyond speculation. According to the divorce petition filed by Sangeeta under the provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, she has cited adultery and cruelty as grounds for separation, India Today reported.

In the petition, Sangeeta reportedly stated that she discovered in 2021 that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress. This revelation, she claims, marked a turning point in their marriage. The document further alleges that despite assurances from Vijay that the relationship would end, it allegedly continued, the report said.

Under Section 27(1)(a) of the Special Marriage Act, a spouse can seek divorce if the other party has committed adultery. Section 27(1)(d) also provides for divorce on the grounds of cruelty. Sangeeta's plea reportedly invokes both these provisions as the legal basis for the dissolution of the marriage.

The petition is currently before the District Court, and the legal process is expected to take its course in the coming months. As of now, Vijay has not issued a public statement regarding the divorce filing.

While rumours had circulated for months, the formal petition makes it clear that the primary reason cited for the divorce is the alleged continuation of an extramarital relationship despite assurances that it would end. According to the claims made in court documents, this alleged breach of trust and the resulting emotional distress form the central grounds for Sangeeta's decision to seek a legal separation.

With the matter now in court, further developments are awaited as the legal proceedings unfold.
