Vaa Vaathiyaar Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad In Karthi's Film?

Karthi's much-awaited movie Vaa Vaathiyaar is hitting the screens on Wednesday to coincide with Pongal festival celebration.

Nalan Kumarasamy of Soodhu Kavvum fame has directed the movie which has Krithi Shetty, Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, Anand Raj, Shilpa Manjunath, Karunakaran, G.M.Sundar, Ramesh Thilak, P.L.Thenappan, Vidhya Borgia, Nivas Adthitan, Madhur Mittal and others in the cast.

Studio Green-funded movie has the music of Santhosh Narayanan, George C. Williams' cinematography and Vetre Krishnan's editing.

With an intriguing premise, a quirky political undertone, and Karthi in an unusually grey role, the film positions itself as a sharp satirical thriller. Unfortunately, while the idea is rich, the execution struggles to keep pace.

The story opens on a wonderfully eccentric note. Rajkiran plays a devoted MGR fan who receives the shocking news of the matinee idol's death while watching one of his films in a packed theatre. At the same moment, his grandson is born. Convinced this coincidence is divine, the old man believes the child is destined to become the next MGR and raises him with ideals of honesty, justice, and cinematic heroism. But fate takes a twist. As the boy grows up, he drifts away from the MGR mould and instead draws inspiration from Nambiar's iconic villains. That child becomes Karthi - a morally ambiguous police officer who operates more like a vigilante than a law enforcer.

This ideological conflict between the values Rajkiran tries to instil and the path Karthi chooses becomes the film's emotional and thematic spine. The tension deepens when a hacking group called Manjal Mugam emerges as a threat to the government, pushing Karthi into the spotlight. While he sets out to catch them, Rajkiran slowly uncovers the disturbing truth about his grandson's methods, leading to a clash of generations, ideals, and ethics.

The film begins on a strong note. Nalan Kumarasamy builds intrigue efficiently, delivering some clever scenes and a tightly staged interval block that promises a thrilling second half. However, once the story crosses that midpoint, it begins to lose its grip. The narrative starts wandering, and what should have been a tense moral drama becomes uneven, with several promising threads left underdeveloped. The latter half mirrors this inconsistency, offering a few striking moments but never fully regaining momentum.

Karthi is undeniably the film's backbone. He brings remarkable intensity and swagger to the role of a crooked cop, effortlessly shifting between charm and menace. It's a performance that keeps you invested even when the screenplay wobbles. Sadly, the rest of the cast - despite having accomplished actors like Krithi Shetty, Sathyaraj, and Anand Raj - is not given enough material to leave a lasting impact.

On the technical front, Vaa Vaathiyaar shines. George C. Williams' cinematography gives the film a distinctive visual texture, Santhosh Narayanan's music adds atmosphere, and Vetre Krishnan's experimental editing occasionally lifts the storytelling. Yet, all these strengths cannot fully compensate for the film's weak writing.

In the end, Vaa Vaathiyaar feels like a missed opportunity - a film with bold ideas and a powerful lead performance that never quite finds the narrative discipline to match its ambition.

Siddarth Srinivas: (3.5/5) - Unique and inventive. A spectacular idea meets cursory world building and characters in Nalan's vibey film that was good fun while it lasted. It is headlined by Karthi's ROCKING performance and SaNa's superb score that raise it up very well.

Yes, the writing in the film is a bit underdeveloped and the villain feels plastic, but what kept it going was the interesting concept and the MGR-ish sequences that stand as the highlight.

Vaa Vaathiyaar would have done even better with more depth and detailing in its narrative, but what we get is definitely a film that works to an extent.
