Nora Thanks Public as Song Gets Removed
Addressing the controversy, Nora shared that she never endorsed the content and was unaware of how the song was presented later. She also thanked the public reaction, saying it played a role in getting the song taken down.
She wrote:
"I would hate for anyone to think I endorse this.. thank you for the backlash because of this pressure the filmmakers have luckily taken it down
Id also request everyone to stop sharing the song because ur just giving it a platform unnecessarily.
On a side note I see some of u guys trying to use this as an opportunity to attack my character..it's unfortunate.
Anyways me and my team will be more careful in the future in such situations. However I do want to reiterate I had no idea about this Hindi song, I did not perform to it and there was no permission taken to use it with my image."
Original Shoot Was for Kannada Film
In her video, Nora explained that the project was not new and was actually filmed three years ago for a Kannada movie. She said she agreed to be part of it because it was a big project and also involved actor Sanjay Dutt, which made the opportunity even more appealing.
She believed the song was inspired by the iconic track "Nayak Nahi Khalnayak Hoon Main" and did not expect any issues at the time.
Language Barrier and Miscommunication
Nora pointed out that she does not understand Kannada, so she depended on the filmmakers to explain the song's meaning while shooting. According to her, the translated version shared with her did not seem inappropriate or vulgar, which is why she went ahead with the performance.
However, she later discovered that a Hindi version had been created with completely different lyrics, which she described as inappropriate. She stressed that she was not informed about this change and did not give any approval for it.
Concerns Over Unapproved Content and AI Use
The actor also expressed frustration over how her image was used without her consent. She revealed that unapproved and unflattering photos were included in the song's promotional material. She also mentioned that an AI-generated image of her and Sanjay Dutt was used, something she strongly disagrees with.
She said this made her uncomfortable during the launch event, but she maintained her composure as she was in a professional environment surrounded by media and filmmakers.
Nora Distanced Herself from the Project
Nora stated that once she heard the Hindi version during the event, she immediately realized it would lead to controversy. Since she understands Hindi, she was aware of the issue right away and decided to distance herself from the project.
She highlighted that she did not promote the song at all after that and chose to stay away from it completely.
Full Statement by Nora Fatehi
She said:
"1. I shot this video 3 years ago in Kannada. I said yes to it because it was part of a big film, with a big icon, Sanjay Dutt. Who would say no to working with him? And it was a remake of, at least what I thought, 'Nayak Nahi Khalnayak Hoon Main,' which is also a very iconic song.
When I am on set to shoot a song, I rely on the filmmakers to translate it for me. When they were translating the song, nothing seemed inappropriate or vulgar. But again, I do not understand Kannada, so I rely on whatever they tell me.
Whatever they have done now-creating a Hindi version, dubbing the voice in Hindi, and adding those inappropriate lyrics-I had no idea about that. They did not take any approval or permission from me.
When I was invited to the launch, I sat and watched the Kannada version. They used very unflattering photos without my permission. They know that I have to approve all my photos. They put out this lyrical version without my approval. Then they created an image of me and Sanjay using AI, which I am already against. So I was already feeling really irritated at the event.
I have to be respectful regardless. I am in the presence of the media, filmmakers, and people who give me opportunities, so I have to carry myself in a certain way.
Now, when they played the Hindi version, I knew that was it-we were going to have issues, because at least I understand Hindi. I disassociated myself from the project. As you can see, I did not promote it at all.
Here's the thing: as an artist, we don't really have backing. We are not nepo kids, and we do not come with a certain power behind us. Thankfully, I have had opportunities to work in Bollywood where my opinion has been respected. However, there are certain industries where they don't listen and do not care about my opinion.
Because of this backlash, they were bound to remove the song, and I am grateful for that. Also, as a side note to the media-if it bothers you so much, then you need to hold the filmmakers and creators of such content accountable. Start talking about their names and showing their images when such controversies arise. Only then will they feel some fear, accountability, and responsibility.
On that note, I will be more careful and more straightforward. Thank you for the backlash."
Call for Accountability in the Industry
In her message, Nora also urged the media and public to hold filmmakers accountable in such situations. She said that attention should not only be on artists, but also on those who create and approve such content.
She ended her statement by saying that she will be more careful in the future and thanked people again for speaking up.
