Akhanda 2 Box Office Collection Day 1: Balakrishna’s Film Opens Strong Despite Mixed Reviews

Nandamuri Balakrishna's much-anticipated Akhanda 2: Thaandavam has opened on a strong note at the box office, overcoming mixed reviews and benefitting from the heightened buzz created by its last-minute postponement. The film, which was supposed to release on December 5 but was pushed at the eleventh hour, finally hit theatres on Friday-and the numbers suggest that the delay worked in its favour, especially in the overseas market.

On its opening day, Akhanda 2 registered an impressive 46.71% occupancy across Telugu states during the morning and afternoon shows. For a big-budget mass entertainer releasing on a working day, the figures indicate solid footfall and sustained viewer interest.

Strong Opening in Key Centres

The film performed particularly well in traditional Balakrishna strongholds. In Hyderabad, Akhanda 2 clocked the highest occupancy with 52.50%, driven largely by packed morning shows at 56% and a steady 49% in the afternoon. Vizag followed closely with 50% overall occupancy, including 54% in morning shows.

Bengaluru, which often reacts cautiously to Telugu mass films, showed a positive response as well, posting an overall 34% occupancy. Chennai recorded 27%, while Warangal registered an impressive 49.50%.

Surprisingly, Mumbai and NCR also showed notable traction, with Mumbai recording 43.50% overall and NCR managing 31%, reflecting Balakrishna's growing pan-India pull following the digital success of the first film.

Some smaller but crucial centres also delivered strong results-Karimnagar (54.5%), Mahbubnagar (49.5%), and Kakinada (57%)-showing that the film's appeal is carrying well beyond the metros.

North America Premiere Sales: A New Record

If the domestic opening is promising, the overseas reception-especially in North America-has been described as nothing short of phenomenal. According to Moksha Movies, the film's overseas distributor, Akhanda 2 has already crossed $125,000 in premiere pre-sales, a figure achieved within hours of advance booking going live.

More impressively, the film sold over 7,200 tickets in just six hours, making it the fastest Indian film to achieve this milestone in the region, according to the distributors. Trade analysts attribute this surge to two factors: Balakrishna's cult fanbase in North America and the unexpected buzz generated after the sudden postponement of its release.

Premiere estimates suggest that the film has already earned around ₹8 crore from Thursday night premieres, a massive number for a Telugu film released on a non-holiday weekend.

Akhanda Legacy Continues

Akhanda 2 carries forward the legacy of the 2021 blockbuster Akhanda, one of Balakrishna's biggest career hits. The sequel reunites the actor with key cast members including Samyuktha Menon, Aadhi Pinisetty, Kabir Duhan Singh, and child artist Harshaali Malhotra, while being jointly produced by 14 Reels Plus Entertainment and IVY Entertainment.

Balakrishna reprises his iconic role, and early audience reactions suggest that his screen presence and mass sequences remain the film's major highlights, even as reviews remain divided on the narrative and pacing.

What the Opening Suggests

Despite mixed critical reception, the opening occupancy and premiere numbers indicate strong audience curiosity and a solid fan-driven opening. The stronghold regions delivering above 50% occupancy demonstrate that Balakrishna's mass appeal remains intact.

If the film sustains well through the first weekend, Akhanda 2 could emerge as a significant grosser for Telugu cinema in the final quarter of 2025.
