His entry comes after months of speculation over his next political move and follows his unsuccessful efforts to secure a place in the BJP after distancing himself from the AIADMK.

Who Is Sengottaiyan?

KA Sengottaiyan, 76, is one of the senior-most leaders from western Tamil Nadu and a long-time confidant of late AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa. With a political career spanning five decades, he has held multiple cabinet portfolios - including School Education, Agriculture Marketing, and Information & Publicity - across various AIADMK governments.

Known for his organisational skills, loyalty to the leadership, and strong hold over the Gobichettipalayam region, Sengottaiyan was regarded as part of Jayalalithaa's trusted inner circle at one time, often involved in key administrative and party decisions.

How Powerful Is He in His Region?

Sengottaiyan remains an influential figure in the Kongu belt, particularly in Erode district. His strength lies in:

Caste Backing: He belongs to the Kongu Vellala Gounder community, one of the most politically significant and economically dominant groups in western Tamil Nadu. His presence is expected to boost TVK's outreach in this vote-rich region.

Local Network: Over the decades, he has built a loyal cadre network across Gobichettipalayam, Perundurai, and nearby pockets, giving him considerable ground influence.

However, his influence seems to have faded in the region in the last decade, as per political analysts.

Electoral Track Record and Winning Margins

Sengottaiyan is a seven-time MLA from Gobichettipalayam. His consistent electoral success made him a pillar of the AIADMK in the region. Some of his notable victories include:

2016 Assembly Election: Won with a margin of over 40,000 votes, reaffirming his hold.

2011 Election: Returned to the Assembly with a comfortable margin, paving the way for his cabinet induction.

Multiple Terms: Between 1980 and 2021, he won almost every election he contested, barring a few interruptions due to internal realignments.

His strong vote-pulling ability was one of the factors that kept him relevant across different AIADMK leadership eras.

During Jayalalithaa's era, Sengottaiyan was valued for his organisational capability and electoral reliability. However, he was sacked by her from his ministerial and party posts in 2012. He was reinstated by Sasikala after Jaya's death.

His Attempt to Join BJP

After Edappadi K Palaniswami consolidated control over the AIADMK, Sengottaiyan's role diminished within the party. In recent months, he explored entry into the BJP and even held informal rounds of discussions. However, the BJP leadership reportedly remained non-committal due to ongoing factional calculations within the party's Tamil Nadu unit and concerns about absorbing AIADMK veterans ahead of future alliances.
