Watch: Chennai Metro Train Stuck Underground as Passengers Walk Through Tunnel After a Technical Issue

A routine commute turned into an unexpected trek for several Chennai Metro passengers on Tuesday morning. Those travelling toward the Wimco Nagar Depot were asked to get off the halted train and walk along the tunnel after the service stalled underground.

Technical Glitch Halts Blue Line Service

The incident occurred on the Chennai Metro Rail's Blue Line, which connects the Wimco Nagar Depot and Chennai International Airport. A technical problem brought the train to a stop between Central Metro and High Court stations. Passengers inside reported that the lights had gone out, leaving the coach in darkness for a few minutes.

Commuters Told to Walk to High Court Station

Videos recorded by passengers show people standing near the handrail, trying to understand what caused the delay. Many described the situation as feeling "trapped" until an announcement finally came.

After nearly ten minutes, they were instructed to disembark and walk to the nearest station, High Court, which is roughly 500 meters away.

Another video captured commuters forming a line and carefully making their way through the tunnel as metro staff guided them forward.

Power Issue Suspected Behind Disruption

Although officials have not confirmed the exact cause, the halt is believed to have been triggered by either a power outage or a technical malfunction on the route.

Services Restored After Brief Interruption

The Chennai Metro Rail later announced that operations had returned to normal.

"Metro train services between Airport and Wimco Nagar Depot on Blue Line have resumed normal operation. Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro to St Thomas Mount on the Green Line are also running as per the Normal Schedule," the Chennai Metro Rail wrote on X.

"We regret the inconvenience caused," it added.
