Tamil Nadu Weather: Erode Sizzles At 36°C; Heavy Rain Alert For 6 Districts Tomorrow

Mercury levels stayed above normal across large parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, with as many as 22 districts recording maximum temperatures above 30°C. Erode emerged as the hottest place in the state, recording a scorching 36.0°C, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).

Several interior districts also experienced intense heat. Karur Paramathi and Madurai Airport recorded 35.0°C each, while Salem and Vellore were close behind at 34.9°C. Tirupattur registered 34.7°C, Palayamkottai 34.5°C, and Madurai city recorded 34.4°C. Even coastal and southern regions remained warm, with Kanyakumari recording 34.2°C.

Major cities witnessed typical summer-like conditions. Chennai Airport recorded 32.0°C, while Nungambakkam weather station recorded 30.7°C. Coimbatore Airport and Thanjavur both recorded 33.0°C, indicating widespread heat across plains.

However, cooler conditions prevailed in hill stations. Kodaikanal recorded a pleasant maximum of 18.1°C, while Udhagamandalam and Coonoor recorded 22.6°C each. Valparai also remained relatively cool at 28.0°C.

Night temperatures showed a sharp contrast between plains and hills. Tiruthani recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 19.5°C in the plains, while Kodaikanal recorded a chilly 9.6°C, making it the coldest place in the state.

Low Pressure System Developing

Meanwhile, the weather department said the low pressure area over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal has weakened. However, the associated cyclonic circulation persists and extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level.

The system is likely to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka over the next 24 hours. Under its influence, a fresh low pressure area is expected to form over the same region during the next 48 hours. A trough extending from this system across south Tamil Nadu and Kerala is influencing weather patterns in the region.

Heavy Rain Alert For Six Districts

Amid rising temperatures, the RMC has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in six southern districts on Saturday.

Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar and Theni districts are likely to receive heavy rains. The rainfall activity is expected due to the strengthening weather system over the Indian Ocean region.

The forecast suggests a mix of hot daytime conditions and sudden rainfall activity in southern parts, reflecting typical pre-summer weather variations in Tamil Nadu.
