Tamil Nadu: PM Modi Lays Foundation For Infra Projects Worth Rs 4400 Crore In Madurai

Calling the projects a “proud chapter” for Tamil Nadu, the Prime Minister highlighted how roads and rail lines were expected to help farmers, businesses and pilgrims by easing movement and improving access to markets, temples and coastal areas across the region, ANI reported.

Infrastructure projects strengthen Tamil Nadu connectivity and economy

The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for four-laning of two key highway stretches, the Marakkanam-Puducherry Section of NH-332A and the Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram Section of NH-87. These works were designed to connect national and state highways more smoothly and improve road safety, while also easing access to coastal areas, major cities and important religious and tourist destinations.

Infrastructure projects highlight key highway and corridor upgrades

The four-laning of the Marakkanam-Puducherry stretch of NH-332A was expected to ease traffic pressure in Puducherry’s urban pockets and almost halve travel time on the route. The journey was planned to reduce from around one hour to nearly 30 minutes, offering a faster link for residents, tourists and cargo vehicles moving between nearby districts and coastal villages.

The upgraded Marakkanam-Puducherry section was also planned to link several important locations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The corridor would improve road access to Mamallapuram, also known as Mahabalipuram, the Kalpakkam Atomic Power Station and Auroville. It would link coastal villages with the Viluppuram district headquarters and support tourism and local economic activity along the shoreline.

The Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram Section of NH-87, once widened, was expected to serve travellers heading to Madurai, Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi, all major religious destinations. The four-laning there would reduce travel time on that route by nearly 40 per cent, bringing the usual one-hour journey down to about 35 minutes and making pilgrim travel more convenient.

The NH-87 project was also designed to support multi-modal connectivity. The corridor would link the railway stations at Madurai and Rameswaram, the airport at Madurai, the naval air station INS Parundu and the non-major ports at Pamban and Rameswaram. This mix of road, rail, air and sea links would help movement of goods and passengers across southern districts.

Aligned with PM Gati Shakti principles, the broader corridor was planned to connect several economic centres. These included fishing clusters, a Special Economic Zone, a Mega Food Park and a textile cluster. Authorities expected this integrated planning to support trade, attract investment and strengthen socio-economic development in and around Tamil Nadu’s coastal belt.

Infrastructure projects include rail upgrades under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme

Along with highways, PM Modi inaugurated several rail infrastructure projects meant to improve passenger comfort and operational capacity in Tamil Nadu. A major part of this work involved eight stations redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which focuses on better design, smoother movement for passengers and more efficient use of rail assets in busy regions.

The eight redeveloped stations that PM Modi inaugurated were Morappur, Bommidi, Srivilliputtur, Sholavandan, Manaparai, Pollachi Junction, Karaikkudi Junction and Thiruvarur Junction. These stations were modernised with new buildings, upgraded platforms and more convenient station layouts, while still reflecting local architecture and cultural styles important to nearby communities.Facilities at these stations included improved waiting halls, lifts, escalators and better access routes within the premises. The upgrades were aimed at making travel smoother for senior citizens, children and Divyangjan, with more user-friendly design, clearer signage and platforms aligned for safer boarding, matching rising expectations of passengers across India’s expanding rail network.

Infrastructure projects expand Chennai rail and Akashvani FM coverage

PM Modi also dedicated the Chennai Beach-Chennai Egmore Fourth Line to the nation. This additional railway line was expected to ease congestion in the Chennai suburban rail network, allowing more passenger and freight trains. Lakhs of commuters, including office-goers, IT professionals, students and traders, were likely to benefit from more frequent and reliable services.

To strengthen public broadcasting, three new Akashvani FM relay transmitters at Kumbakonam, Yercaud and Vellore were inaugurated. These transmitters were designed to widen FM radio coverage, provide more stable signals and improve access to government information and entertainment programmes for people living across multiple districts of Tamil Nadu’s diverse landscape.

The projects announced in Madurai showed the Union government’s focus on balanced regional growth, with better links for Tamil Nadu that also support national corridors serving states such as Uttar Pradesh. By bringing together highways, rail lines and broadcasting services, the initiatives were expected to support mobility, information access and economic activity for citizens across the country.
