With a nationwide 'Bharat Bandh' scheduled for Wednesday, February 12, uncertainty prevails over whether schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu will function as usual. The strike, called by a joint platform of central trade unions and farmers' organisations, is aimed at protesting several key policies of the Union government.

The proposed bandh has been organised to oppose the four labour codes introduced by the Centre. Trade unions argue that the new codes weaken worker protections, make hiring and firing easier for employers, and dilute long-standing labour safeguards. They claim the changes could reduce job security and weaken collective bargaining rights.

Alongside labour concerns, farmer bodies have raised objections to proposed legislations such as the Draft Seed Bill and the Electricity Amendment Bill, stating that these measures may adversely affect agricultural autonomy and increase input costs.

Another major flashpoint is the proposed India-US trade agreement. Farmers' groups fear that reduced import barriers could lead to an influx of cheaper agricultural produce, impacting domestic farmers and destabilising rural incomes. The trade deal has therefore become a rallying point for protestors who argue that the agreement needs wider consultation and stronger safeguards.

Given that the bandh call is directed at the BJP-led Central government, political observers are closely watching the response of state governments, including Tamil Nadu. While there has been speculation about whether the ruling DMK may extend tacit support to the protest, no formal announcement has been made regarding statewide closures.

Tamil Nadu School Holiday On February 12?

As of now, there is no official confirmation from the Tamil Nadu government about declaring a holiday for schools and colleges on February 12. Educational institutions are awaiting clear instructions from authorities before taking a call.

The timing of the proposed strike is particularly sensitive for schools, as the academic calendar is entering a crucial phase. The Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE), Tamil Nadu, has already released the public examination timetable for 2026. Class 12 board exams are scheduled from March 2 to March 26, while the SSLC (Class 10) examinations will be conducted between March 11 and April 6.

Importantly, practical examinations for Class 12 students are currently underway from February 9 to February 14. For Class 10 students, practical exams are set to be held from February 23 to February 28. Any disruption during this period could affect scheduled practical sessions, revision classes, and preparatory assessments.

School administrators emphasise that the coming weeks are critical for completing syllabus revisions, conducting model examinations, and addressing last-minute doubts. Maintaining continuity in classroom teaching is considered essential to ensure students are fully prepared ahead of their board exams.

Parents and students are therefore advised to stay updated through official announcements from district administrations and school managements. In previous instances of statewide protests, decisions regarding school closures have typically been communicated at the last minute based on law-and-order assessments and transport availability.

Until a formal order is issued, schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu are expected to function as per schedule. However, the situation remains fluid, and any developments related to the Bharat Bandh could influence the final decision.
