Madurai’s Biggest Traffic Bottleneck To Ease As Goripalayam Flyover Set To Open

Madurai is set to witness a major upgrade in its urban infrastructure with the inauguration of the much-awaited Goripalayam flyover on February 21, 2026. The flyover, constructed to ease severe congestion at one of the city's busiest traffic intersections, will be inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin during his visit to the temple city.

The structure will be officially named the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Flyover, honouring the iconic freedom fighter. The project marks a significant milestone in Madurai's efforts to modernise its road network and improve mobility for lakhs of daily commuters.

The flyover, built by the State Highways Department at a cost of ₹213 crore, stretches 2,100 metres and connects Tamukkam Junction with Anna Salai in Nelpettai. It also includes an additional arm linking Sellur, further strengthening connectivity between key residential and commercial areas. The massive structure consists of 61 piers and 62 spans, along with service roads ranging from 7.5 metres to 10.5 metres in width. A vehicular underpass is also planned near the junction to improve traffic distribution.

Goripalayam junction has long been a major bottleneck in Madurai, handling heavy traffic from multiple arterial roads, including the Varanasi-Kanyakumari corridor and the Madurai-Alagarkoil route. Residents and commuters have faced frequent delays for years, particularly during peak hours and festival seasons. The flyover is expected to address these challenges by allowing uninterrupted traffic movement and reducing travel time significantly.

The project was originally tendered in 2022 and received technical approval in 2023. However, construction faced delays due to land acquisition issues and legal hurdles. Work eventually began on October 30, 2023, after these challenges were resolved. The design was also modified in 2023 to shorten one portion of the flyover to facilitate the smooth conduct of the famous Kallazhagar temple festival, an important cultural event in Madurai.

Construction has progressed rapidly over the past two years. As of early February 2026, overall work had reached about 72 per cent completion. The main arm between Tamukkam Junction and Anna Salai has been prioritised for inauguration, with final deck slab work, installation of street lighting, and painting nearing completion. The Sellur arm is expected to be completed between March and May 2026.

Once fully operational, the flyover is expected to transform traffic movement in central Madurai. It will enable faster and safer travel for commuters, reduce congestion at ground-level intersections, and improve connectivity between key parts of the city.

Urban planners and residents believe the project will not only ease daily commuting but also support Madurai's economic growth by improving access to commercial zones and reducing transportation delays.

With its inauguration just days away, the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Flyover stands as one of Madurai's most important infrastructure additions in recent years, promising smoother roads and a more efficient transport network for the historic city.
