Chennai Rains: Moderate Showers Lash Tamil Nadu Capital; KK Nagar Tops with 58 mm

Chennai received widespread rainfall on Monday, bringing relief from the recent heat across several parts of the city and its suburbs.

Rainfall was recorded across multiple locations, with KK Nagar receiving 58 mm, West Mambalam 50 mm, and Guindy (Sipcot) 51 mm. Nandanam IMD recorded 46 mm, while Velliyur and Thamaraipakkam reported 39 mm each. Other areas such as Saligramam (35 mm), Moggappair (33 mm), Sriperumbudur (28 mm), Nerkundram (26 mm), Thiruvanmayur (24 mm), and Thiruninravur (20 mm also received moderate rainfall. Chembarabakkam recorded 10 mm, data shared by weather blogger R Pradeep John said.

Thunderstorm activity was observed over south Chennai, with storm cells moving towards Tambaram, OMR, ECR, and Maraimalai Nagar regions.

According to the local forecast, Chennai is expected to experience generally cloudy skies on April 6 and partly cloudy skies on April 7. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely in some areas over the next two days. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 33-35°C, while minimum temperatures will remain around 26-27°C.

Across Tamil Nadu, interior regions continued to record high temperatures. Erode and Karur (Paramathi) recorded the highest maximum temperature of 40.0°C. Vellore recorded 39.8°C, while Tiruchirappalli and Madurai recorded 39.7°C and 39.0°C respectively. Chennai recorded 34.6°C, while Chennai Airport recorded 37.7°C.

In contrast, lower minimum temperatures were observed in parts of the state. Thanjavur recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 20.2°C. Hill stations including Kodaikanal and Udagamandalam recorded minimum temperatures of 12.6°C.

Meteorological conditions indicate that a trough extending from Telangana to the Gulf of Mannar across Tamil Nadu at about 0.9 km above mean sea level is influencing the current weather activity.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has indicated that light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with thunderstorms and lightning at one or two places. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations over districts including Theni, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram.

A yellow alert has been issued, warning of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph at isolated places.

Temperatures are expected to rise gradually by 2-3°C over isolated pockets during April 6 and 7, and remain near normal from April 8 to 10 across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions.
