Chennai's metro system is preparing for a significant upgrade that promises to transform travel in the western parts of the city. Beginning January 2026, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will start operations on the Poonamallee-Porur corridor, a nine-kilometre stretch that forms part of the ambitious Phase II expansion. The New Corridor

Train Operations

CMRL has announced that 13 three-coach trains will be deployed on this stretch. Initially, these trains will be operated by nearly 30 trained operators, but the long-term plan is to transition towards driverless technology. The trains will run at six-minute intervals, ensuring minimal waiting time for passengers. For comparison, Phase I of the Chennai Metro currently operates 45 four-coach trains across a 54-km network, with varying frequencies depending on the route. On shorter stretches like Washermanpet-Alandur, trains arrive every three minutes, while longer routes such as Chennai Central-Airport operate at 12-minute intervals.

Station Design & Facilities

Unlike the sprawling stations of Phase I, the new Phase II stations are being designed to be compact and commuter-friendly. This means passengers can reach platforms faster, reducing the time spent navigating large station complexes.

Safety is also being enhanced with the introduction of half-height platform screen doors on elevated stations-something not available in Phase I. These barriers will prevent accidental falls and improve overall passenger security.

Commuters will continue to enjoy the convenience of National Common Mobility Cards and QR Code tickets, ensuring seamless travel across both Phase I and Phase II networks.

Behind the Scenes

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been entrusted with managing the 118.9-km Phase II network. DMRC has already mobilised its workforce, with training sessions and trial runs underway to prepare for the launch.

Meanwhile, CMRL has received approval from the Railway Board for the project but is still awaiting one crucial regulatory clearance before applying for the next level of safety certification. Officials remain optimistic that the approval will come through soon, keeping the January 2026 timeline on track.
