Chennai has added a modern touch to its tourism landscape with the launch of a fully air-conditioned electric double-decker bus designed exclusively for heritage sightseeing. The eco-friendly initiative blends sustainability with cultural pride, offering residents and visitors a unique way to explore the city's iconic landmarks and historic corridors.

Ticket Price

Passengers can enjoy the curated city tour at a flat ticket price of ₹200 per person. The affordable fare makes the service accessible to families, tourists, and students while encouraging greater use of green public transport.

Route

The sightseeing bus begins and ends its journey at the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) office located inside the Tamil Nadu Tourism Complex on Wallajah Road near Kalaivanar Arangam. The route has been carefully designed to showcase Chennai's architectural heritage, political landmarks, cultural institutions, and coastal attractions in a single loop.

The return trip brings passengers back to the starting point via the DGP office, completing a comprehensive city circuit.

The heritage tour includes a long list of prominent locations that reflect Chennai's historical, cultural, and administrative identity. Highlights along the route include:

A bus arrives every 30 minutes at the boarding point, ensuring convenient access without long waiting times.

Design and Cultural Theme

Painted in a striking red hue, the bus showcases artistic depictions of Tamil heritage icons such as Brihadeeswarar Temple, Marina Lighthouse, Ripon Building, and a Jallikattu bull tamer. The slogan "Long Live Tamil" is prominently displayed on both sides, reinforcing the cultural identity the project aims to celebrate.

Launch and Funding

The service was inaugurated during the World Tamil Diaspora Day 2026 celebrations. The ₹1.89-crore electric bus was donated to TTDC by Ashok Leyland, Switch Mobility, and Tamil expatriates from the United States, and is now operated by TTDC as part of its tourism outreach initiative.

Expansion Plans

TTDC is preparing to introduce a second sightseeing route connecting Chennai to Mamallapuram via Dakshina Chitra and Muttukadu, expanding the tourism network beyond city limits.

More Double-Deckers Coming Soon

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation plans to add 20 AC electric double-decker buses under a long-term gross cost contract model. Operators will manage vehicle ownership and maintenance for 12 years, while MTC handles ticket revenue and payments per kilometre. Deployment will be limited to routes with sufficient vertical clearance to avoid overhead obstacles.

A Nostalgic Comeback

Double-decker buses first appeared in Chennai in the 1970s but were phased out in the 1980s. They made a brief return between 1997 and 2008 on the High Court-Tambaram route. The new electric fleet marks a historic revival after 17 years, signaling a greener and more heritage-focused future for city transport.
