Bharat Vistar: A New AI Backbone for Agriculture
Detailing a major digital initiative, the Finance Minister announced the launch of Bharat Vistar, an AI-based platform aimed at simplifying access to agricultural information and services. Explaining the proposal in her Budget speech, she said, "Bharat Vistar - Virtually Integrated System to access Agricultural Resources. I propose to launch Bharat Vistar, a multilingual AI tool that shall integrate the agri-stack portals and the ICAR package on agricultural practices with AI systems."
The tool is designed to help farmers take informed decisions by bringing together multiple agricultural databases and best-practice packages on a single, intelligent platform, accessible in several Indian languages.
Push for Crop Diversification Across Regions
The Budget also underlined the government's intent to reduce risks for farmers by encouraging diversification into high-value crops suited to different geographies. Sitharaman stressed that the focus would be on region-specific strengths, from coastal belts to hill states.
She said, "To diversify farm outputs, increase productivity, enhance farmers' incomes and create new employment opportunities, we will support high-value crops such as coconut, sandalwood, cocoa, and cashew in the coastal areas. Agar trees in the Northeast and nuts such as almonds, walnuts, and pine nuts in our hilly regions. All of them will be supported."
According to the Finance Minister, this approach is expected to improve farm incomes while creating new opportunities in allied sectors such as processing and value addition.
Coconut Sector to Get Dedicated Support
Highlighting India's global position in coconut production, Sitharaman announced a focused scheme to improve productivity and competitiveness in the sector. She noted the scale of dependence on coconut farming across the country.
"India is the world's largest producer of coconuts. About 30 million people, including nearly 10 million farmers, depend on coconuts for their livelihood. To further enhance competitiveness in coconut production, I propose a coconut promotion scheme to increase production and enhance productivity through various interventions, including replacing non-productive trees with new saplings or plants or varieties in major coconut growing states," the Finance Minister further said.
Technology and Targeted Schemes to Boost Rural Livelihoods
Taken together, the AI-led Bharat Vistar platform and crop-specific promotion schemes signal a broader strategy to modernise agriculture. By combining digital advisory tools with region-focused crop support, the Budget aims to reduce uncertainty for farmers, raise productivity and strengthen rural employment over the long term.
