IPL 2026 Boost for Bengaluru as Chinnaswamy Stadium Gets Karnataka Govt Clearance After Safety Upgrades

The Karnataka government has officially cleared the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to host matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, bringing relief to fans and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise ahead of the tournament.

The approval comes after an expert committee appointed by the state government reviewed safety upgrades and infrastructure improvements at the stadium. The inspection process was part of a broader review initiated following safety concerns raised after the IPL 2025 victory celebrations that resulted in a tragic stampede outside the venue.

Safety Upgrades and Infrastructure Changes

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), which manages the stadium, has undertaken several renovations over the past few months to improve crowd management and emergency access.

Key upgrades include:

Installation of multiple new entry gates

Widening of existing entry and exit points

Creation of new walkways around the stadium

A holding area near the old National Cricket Academy facility

Dedicated entry and exit routes for emergency vehicles

These changes were implemented following recommendations from the Justice D'Cunha Committee, which was formed after the 2025 stampede incident that claimed 11 lives. The committee conducted a detailed safety and structural audit of the stadium and suggested both short-term and long-term improvements.

KSCA had been asked to complete the immediate upgrades by March 15, a deadline the association says it has met.

Renovation Work Began After KSCA Elections

The stadium upgrade work began in mid-December after the KSCA elections, where former India fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad was elected president of the association.

Since then, KSCA officials have been coordinating with state authorities on compliance and safety procedures. The association has also confirmed that earlier issues flagged in safety audits - including those that led the state electricity regulatory body to temporarily cut power to the stadium last year - have now been resolved.

Measures to Improve Crowd Management

Alongside infrastructure upgrades, organisers are introducing additional crowd-control measures for IPL 2026.

The KSCA and the RCB franchise are in discussions with the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation to streamline fan movement on match days. The franchise is also set to implement QR-code based digital ticket scanning, which will allow spectators to enter the stadium directly without exchanging online bookings for physical tickets at counters.

Officials believe this step will significantly reduce crowding outside the stadium on match days.

RCB's IPL 2026 Home Matches

Royal Challengers Bengaluru will begin their IPL 2026 home campaign at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28, when they face Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The team's second home game will be against Chennai Super Kings on April 5.

According to the schedule announced so far, RCB will play five home matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, while two additional home games will be hosted at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Stadium in Raipur.

With the venue now officially cleared, preparations are underway to ensure smooth operations and enhanced safety during the upcoming IPL season.
