CJ Roy’s Death Probe: Investigation To Be Shifted To CID, High-Level Inquiry Ordered; When Is The Cremation?

The death of Confident Group chairman CJ Roy during an Income Tax raid has led to calls for a deeper and independent investigation.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said a high-level probe will be conducted and that the case may be transferred from Ashok Nagar police station to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Officials indicated that the transfer could take place by January 31 evening or by February 1 morning. The move comes amid growing public attention and political scrutiny surrounding the incident.

Family Speaks Out as Last Rites Begin

CJ Roy's brother, CJ Babu, told the media that the only issue his brother was facing was the ongoing Income Tax scrutiny. He said there were no known threats, debts or personal problems. Babu added that he last spoke to Roy at around 10:40 am on Friday and plans to speak to office staff to understand what happened later in the day.

Earlier, Roy's wife Liny and son Rohit reached Bowring Hospital mortuary in Bengaluru. The family has said their focus is currently on completing the cremation and related rituals.

Government Pushes for High-Level Inquiry

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said the government is committed to finding the truth behind the incident. He stated that when Income Tax officials were questioning Roy, he asked for a few minutes, went inside his office chamber, and did not return. He added that a detailed investigation would reveal further facts and that a report has also been sought by authorities in Delhi.

According to sources, senior officials believe a CID probe would ensure impartiality given the sensitive nature of the case and Roy's high public profile.

Political Reactions and Ministerial Statements

Kerala Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan raised doubts about the circumstances of Roy's death and called for a thorough investigation, saying the matter raises serious questions.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said an Income Tax raid had taken place at the company in December and that Roy was summoned as part of the procedure. He had returned from Dubai three days before the incident. Officials recorded his statement at the office, and after requesting time alone, Roy did not return for nearly 20 minutes. He was later found dead in his chamber.

The minister added that police have been directed to examine what led to the incident, the surrounding events, and possible reasons behind it.

Police Action and Key Developments

Late on Friday night, senior police officers, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, held discussions with the Director General of Police. Sources said there was broad agreement that the case should be handed over to the CID for a more detailed investigation.

Police have begun recording statements from family members and office staff. Investigators are also checking Roy's phone records to identify his last contacts. A diary recovered from his office has been taken into custody and is being examined for possible leads.

While initial findings point towards suicide, police officials have said final conclusions will be drawn only after forensic and post-mortem reports are received. The expected CID takeover reflects the seriousness of the case and the government's assurance that all aspects will be thoroughly examined.
