Bengaluru observed a temperature drop across its three key India Meteorological Department observatories, with cooler conditions linked to a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, and light rainfall is expected on January 10 and 11 in select districts.

At the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in north Bengaluru, the minimum temperature fell to 13.2°C at 8.30 am on Thursday, about 1.2°C below normal. The maximum temperature stood at 25.6°C, recorded at 5.30 pm, marking a 2°C drop from the seasonal average.

The HAL Airport weather station in east Bengaluru also reported cooler conditions, with a minimum temperature of 14.4°C and a maximum of 26.1°C, representing dips of 0.7°C and 1.3°C, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Bengaluru City Observatory in the central part of the city recorded a minimum temperature of 14.9°C and a maximum of 25.5°C, showing decreases of 1.1°C and 1.4°C, respectively.

IMD Explains Cause of Temperature Drop

According to IMD officials, the fall in temperatures is linked to a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, which was moving west-northwest at a speed of around 13 kmph. As of 8.30 am on January 8, the system was located nearly 360 km east-southeast of Sri Lanka and is expected to continue moving west-northwestwards across the southwest Bay.

The changing weather pattern associated with this system is influencing atmospheric conditions over southern India, including Karnataka, resulting in cooler temperatures and increased cloud cover.

Light Rain Likely in Bengaluru Districts

IMD has also forecast light rainfall at one or two places in Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagara and Chikkaballapur districts on January 10 and 11. While widespread rain is not expected, brief showers could add to the chill and keep daytime temperatures subdued.

Weather officials advised residents to be prepared for cooler mornings, pleasant afternoons and slightly chilly nights over the next few days. With light rain in the forecast, temperatures are likely to remain below normal, offering Bengaluru a short spell of typical winter-like weather conditions.
